What’s in My Wallet: Everyday Carry for Style + Smarts
I’m all about simple solutions that still feel special. When you’re constantly on the go — running to the subway, grabbing coffee between meetings, or catching a last-minute dinner with friends — the last thing you need is a bulky bag slowing you down. That’s why my wallet strategy is minimal, flexible, and built for real life.
Let’s take a look inside.
The Cardholder Essentials
Most days, I carry one of my compact Em John cardholders [shop the one I’m using →], because it holds just enough without tempting me to overstuff. Here’s exactly what I keep in it:
- My ID (obviously)
- One credit card — I rotate between my favorite points cards depending on the season. If you’re still using a debit card for everything, let me introduce you to a better way to earn rewards [here’s one I love →].
- My MetroCard, always.
- A folded $20 bill — because some spots still don’t take cards, and you never want to be caught without tip cash.
- A message from a loved one. Mine’s a note my mom tucked into my college backpack — it’s been in every wallet since.
-
And most importantly: an AirTag. I keep one hidden in the main pocket for peace of mind anytime I’m moving through the city solo or traveling.
Minimalist Tip: If I’m running errands or don’t feel like carrying a bag, I’ll slide my cards into a magnetic wallet that snaps right to the back of my phone. Hands free, and I always know where everything is.
When I Need More Room
Some days require a little more than just the basics — and that’s when I grab my zip-around wallet [check it out here →]. It fits everything I need without turning into a black hole. When I use it, I’ll usually add:
- - Lip balm or a tiny perfume sample (I keep a mini Glossier You vial in mine)
- - A few loyalty cards — coffee shop, nail salon, etc.
- - A small mirror or a pack of mints
- - A gift card I’ve been meaning to use
- - Extra currency if I’m prepping for a trip
It’s still slim enough to toss in any purse or carry-on, but it gives me just enough room to bring those little extras that make the day easier.
